Event Profile

"Here's a story for the kids!" shrieks Ima Robot lead singer and mastermind Alex Ebert on the Los Angeles quintet's first single "Dynomite." Despite promises for story time, the high-powered nu-wave workout is anything but wholesome family fun. Between angelic "ah-ahs" and pogo stick, punch-drunk energy, Ebert croons on the subject of aberrant sex with zeal. It's not exactly Romper Room, but not a funeral dirge either. It's a love song wrapped in Ziggy Stardust's feather boa.
These five talented musicians -- Ebert, guitarist Timmy the Terrible, Oligee on keys, bassist Justin Meldal-Johnson and drummer Joey Waronker -- don't take themselves seriously. There's a manic joy throughout Ima Robot's self-titled debut, released on the major label Virgin Records. Here's another story for the kids: Meldal-Johnson (Beck, Tori Amos, Frank Black) and Waronker (R.E.M., Beck, Smashing Pumpkins) drop all their lucrative work as sidemen to join a relatively unknown band. They provide an airtight rhythm section and bring experience from rock's upper echelons.

Like a great ball team, a good combo of seasoned vets and talented rookies makes for excellence. One thing's for sure, these kids are all right. Story time is over. Goodnight."

Oligee is definitely Fish. I would say Tim is more a Kurt Rambis (if we're talking all-stars here).

Alex = Kobe
JMJ = Magic Johnson
Tim - Rambis
Oligee = Fisher
Scott = Michael Cooper

edit: Joey = Glenn Rice
