Santa Barbara show @ Velvet Jones - January 7

batcave_baby - 1-2-2004 at 02:40 PM

For anyone making a trek to this show...

http://www.velvet-jones.com/NavPage.html

I'm in Santa Barbara fairly often, but I've never been to this venue before. Word on the street is that its a somewhat cheesy Santa Barbara-ish club with full bar, DJ nights, and live bands occasionally. The size of the venue seems to be great for seeing Ima Robot. You know, enough space to flail around in, but small enough to still get the Alex-crotch-in-your-face treatment. (Hey, I'm not complaining)

Anyway, before the show you can find me at the Press Room on Ortega and State Street. It's a rad English pub just about a quarter mile from Velvet Jones.

Is anyone planning on this show? I don't know what kind of following they have around them parts, but I'll be out in full force. And that's something to look out for. Phobiac? Anyone?

draconian - 1-2-2004 at 05:16 PM

Phobes is out of state then, I think, and I'm only coming back for the Henry Fonda...we're counting on you to hold up the front row for us, Batcave--though isn't Matt P. from around those parts? Or is he still in Europe?

batcave_baby - 1-2-2004 at 05:22 PM

Yeah, I'll be at the Henry Fonda and UCLA shows as well. It'll be nice to see them away from LA, though. I'd love to make it to the Casbah show in San Diego, but I doubt it.

Hmmm, Matt is back from Europe, so he'll be at the Santa Barbara show, too. Two other friends (if that's what I call them) are going, but like I mentioned before, they tend to head-butt me when they've been drinking, so I'll need to hide out.

But don't worry, that front row will be well held. And well-heeled, I suppose!

Setlist

Here's the setlist from the Santa Barbara show:

Song #1
Dirty Life
A Is For Action
Alive
Let's Talk Turkey
STD Dance
Dynomite
Black Jettas
Scream
Philosophee
12=3

I may have time later today to post a brief pseudo-review of the show.

hey, did you get any photos?:D

Sorry!

batcave_baby - 1-9-2004 at 11:11 AM

I was a total failure. I brought a camera with a dead battery, and my friend's camera malfunctioned. So, sadly, I didn't get any photos. I got some love, though. And there was a guy next to me with a digital camera who I recognized from other Ima Robot shows. Hopefully, he'll share with us. The conditions seemed pretty conducive to decent shots; it was light enough and the stage was extremely close to the dance floor. I'll be sure to take photos at the UCLA show.

No Here Come The Bombs at the end, dissolving into hysteria?

Oh, there was hysteria all right!

batcave_baby - 1-9-2004 at 11:23 AM

Yes, sorry, I left that one off. So add Here Come the Bombs at the end, then stick that in your Setlist Database and smoke it! Oh, I have word for you regarding The Beat Goes On. I'll see you at the Gary Honda show?

Phobiac - 1-9-2004 at 11:28 AM

Ohhh....secret The Beat Goes On news?

Yup, Gary Honda...if you're not there...you're not there.

Yeah, drac will be there. I'm think of making the trek down to SD for the show on Sat. Shamu and Ima all in one day...poor Shamu

Word is that this was a dope show. Alex says one of his finest performances ever.

Oh yes, it was total Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing

batcave_baby - 1-9-2004 at 12:09 PM

Or Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret, your pick. The turn-out was excellent for Santa Barbara. I'm the worst person to attempt a review though, because I'm so absorbed in the music and performance that I'm really not objective.

The stage was a little cramped, and there was nothing for Alex to climb on, so I think that fact gave him a little bit more of the ants-in-the-pants dance syndrom! Although I wouldn't have minded him climbing on ME. My cronies and I held up that front row like motherfuckers. I really wasn't paying attention to what was going on behind me, but I did notice the crowd's enthusiasm streadily increasing after Dirty Life. The crowd seemed most familiar with Alive, Dynomite, and Black Jettas. Scream was beautiful, as usual, but I sensed less emotion than I've noted at prior shows. That song always gets me. Ah, STD Dance, what can I say? I think that's where the Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing comes in. Everyone was showing their love all over the place!

I hope the guys enjoyed themselves, because the audience plainly enjoyed the show, and we wouldn't want it to be entirely one-side.

Phobiac, you're tempting me. I just might have to abandon my responsibilite again, and head down to San Diego as well.

colforbin6 - 1-9-2004 at 12:23 PM

rest assured, it was a great time to all involved.

TurtleEnterprises - 1-9-2004 at 12:27 PM

All this talk bout the other shows are getting me so freaking excited for the Henry Fonda show!!! I can't wait , Hope to see you guys there..
Well how would I know I dont know what any of you guys look like.........:duh:

colforbin6 - 1-9-2004 at 12:32 PM

.net flag.

lomax - 1-9-2004 at 01:13 PM

u really got a .net flag?
thats the best idea ever.

draconian - 1-9-2004 at 02:13 PM

Ahhh! I am desperate for this Beat Goes On news. And laughing at Alex's antsy-ness over having nothing to climb up upon. Perhaps the road crew can travel with a portable stripper pole to bolt down on every stage so that Alex has an outlet for his energy.

p.s. Turtle Enterprises, if I somehow find you before the Henry Fonda gig, can I give you some stickers to pass out? U2U me a description of what you'll be wearing or something before next Friday.

draconian - 1-9-2004 at 02:15 PM

addendum: Do you know who have flags? The Rooney girls. They were traipsing about the Coachella grounds all weekend with those damn Rooney flags.
