What's Your Most Memorable Moment at an Ima Robot Show?

MichelleRene - 2-4-2004 at 03:14 PM

Just wondering if anyone has any funny or amazing stories at an Ima Robot show?

Mine was finding out that my friend kept grabbing their butts and didn't tell me til a week later. It was memorable because looking back, I now know why the guys kept smiling and laughing when she got her picture taken with them......:o:wow::wow::wow::wow:

Neuwave - 2-4-2004 at 03:59 PM

HA! That's hilarious. I've got quite a few, because I've been to so many, but the one that sticks out is the first show I ever attended at the Viper in 2002 when I was on the back wall, and Beck walked in front of me, and I sort of punched him in the arm to get his attention, and say "HI", and he turned, and looked with this blank stare like, "Why did you just punch me?". He was cool though.:) Actually, a lot of things happened that night, but that sticks out most.

Ah yes..My Beck run-in at a Bot show was quite memorable..I even got a hug from him..What a great night..That was my first Bot show as well!

Another one would be the Troub show when I got home and realized my bra had come unhooked.I had just one little hook holding on for dear life..Oi..

draconian - 2-4-2004 at 07:13 PM

Great topic, Micher! Here are mine:

1) Viper Room last fall - that show when they were on the tail end of obscurity and right on the verge of breaking out, the room was packed with people who had embraced the album (which had been out for like three weeks) or had been there from the early days...crazy crazy performance with the band going OFF. Alex leaping about and even running across the keyboards at one point.

2) Henry Ford January '04 - incredible first taste of the mania beginning to surround the band...this time it was the crowd leaping about. There was some awesome energy in the room that night, it's one Ima Robot show I will never forget (and will compare future shows to, no doubt).

3) Metro - May '03 - Phobiac will probably list this up there too, but the shout out from Alex to the "L.A. friends" followed by Ages of Ruin was pretty classic.

4) Troubador - August '04 (?) - First live play of STD Dance - totally took me by surprise and was the first real departure from the more punk-influenced stuff. The crowd loved it and I really get a kick out of seeing the reaction from people at shows who hear it for the first time.

RoninZero - 2-4-2004 at 07:21 PM

after the Bmore show my friends and i caught alex freezing his ass off. damn it was cold that night
i offered him my coat andhat but he didn't take it :(
oh well Hopefully i will see him after the DC show and talk to him again.

draconian dude r u like really close to them?

draconian - 2-4-2004 at 07:25 PM

Not really, we just do this site and try to support them however we can, so it was a nice surprise to get the mention!

Phobiac - 2-4-2004 at 09:20 PM

Yikes....every show is special in its own way; each warming a different area of my body.

ViperRoom (2002): the lineup consisted of Loaded Love, Black Money, Apples, etc. Some dude outside was speaking to the bands managers and was talking about myself and draconian singing along to every song. Hopefully we didn't ruin it for him; draconian isn't ready for American Idol.

SpaceLand (2002): Ages of Ruin debuts and the energy that was released from five musicians is indescribable. What ever happened to New Negatives?

Neuwave yelling after the set is over…”Black Money….Black Money is the best man.” or something to that sort.

La Cigel, The Astoria, The Metro: Of course the “serendipitous” business schedule that takes me to Paris and London catching the entire Ima Robot European tour…opening in Paris, for Blur at The Astoria and at The Metro; Alex to dedicate Ages of Ruin for the L.A. folk (draconian and myself); unless the twelve others Brits were from L.A.

TurtleEnterprises - 2-4-2004 at 11:51 PM

Meeting Alex at the Troub when they opened for Junior Senior was my best moment... He was so calm, I guess I thought he'd be moving all tweeky like he is on stage. He was just chillin after the show ... Good Times :saint:

boogiewalls - 2-5-2004 at 08:44 PM

I remeber when i saw them at the b-more show Alex liked my wifey's arm and smelt my friend's arm durring the show
I later met him outside after the show, he's a really kool guy
and she the most funniest thing too.
He asked us if we were staying later to see the ravenettes
i said no and he said they're a really good band if you close your eyes
I glad he didn't they a good band if you close you ears

TurtleEnterprises - 2-5-2004 at 10:24 PM

ehh wah? que? english please?;)

lomax - 2-6-2004 at 03:53 AM

well, last night.

Alex sung the end of 'Black Jettas' on one of the 'amps' at the front, turned round like a car! He then fell off and sung the first verse of Scream lying on his arse!! GREAT!

MichelleRene - 2-6-2004 at 08:31 AM

Hey Boogiewalls, I don't remember Alex smelling anyone's arm during their set at Fletchers and I was in the front row. Where were you? Are you that guy with the stuffed toy of Rudolphs dentist friend?

batcave_baby - 2-6-2004 at 03:23 PM

Yes, every show is quite memorable in it's own rite, but the Roxy show last September was particularly, uh...rambunctious. There was a really rad sort of magnetic feeling in the crowd, kind of a "dying for it" feel. Or maybe it was just me. Anyway, it was the show where Scott was initiated, and as many of you will recall, after Joey keeled over, the band asked if there was a drummer in the audience. I yelled out "I play skin flute!" a little louder than I had intended to, and Alex said "I know YOU do". There's a Moment of Zen for ya!

draconian - 2-6-2004 at 04:35 PM

HA!

TurtleEnterprises - 2-6-2004 at 05:10 PM

I think I can play Hot Cross Buns:P

MichelleRene - 2-7-2004 at 01:00 PM

I'm sorry if it sounds stupid...but what is hot cross buns Turtle?

I had to laugh at the skin flute one!

TurtleEnterprises - 2-7-2004 at 01:08 PM

some dumb song for beggining flute players, I think that's what they teach most kids in middle school music class. Consider it the easiest notes to play.:)

MichelleRene - 2-7-2004 at 01:12 PM

Would be a great name for a band.......

Now, Skin Flute...that might be a funky name for a girl band.

"Now ladies and gentleman please welcome all the way from Intercourse Pennsylvania "Skin Flute"! Give em' a hand! hehehehe:lol:

RiffRaff - 2-7-2004 at 01:26 PM

- The video shoot show :)
- The "death" of Joey at the Roxy with a 'What are we Made From" performance that blew me away
- The entirety of the packed Viper Room show! Their best yet, I think.

JackieWhite - 2-9-2004 at 08:22 PM

When they opened for The White Stripes in Berkeley my friends and I were doing this weird "neo-peace" sign with our hands at the very front of the crowd and Alex was asking us what kind of piece sign it was. Then later in the show he was trying to do it, but couldn't figure out what fingers to put up. It was pretty funny. You can hear him asking us about it if you listen to the recording of the 9-13-03 show in the download area. I got all excited. Anyway, it was an awesome show and I'll most definitely remember that night.

I remember him asking that! I just thought that he was making some strange "Berkeley" remark...talk'in about peace signs and all that, but I guess you were the cause of that! Crazy...now I get it...almost a half-a-year later

poobs - 2-9-2004 at 11:07 PM

Ha! I remember that, too!!:D

RoninZero - 2-11-2004 at 05:06 AM

OMG no he was right beside me and yeah Alex did grab my arm and my firend Eric's but he liked my hand that was quite weird but oh well. he was one of the 2 black guys there.he was off to the right i believe.

Athena - 2-11-2004 at 07:48 AM

I have to agree that the Roxy show was very memorable. Dynamic sexual energy-- people in the front almost frantic at "I wanna fuckfuckfuck". *^_^* (After the show I mentioned to Alex how great his "f*,f*,f*" was, but he seemed to think he could have gotten it better. --IMHO, Any better and there would have been fainting in the audience!!)

Rowdy crowd interaction with girls handing the guys the actual keys to their Jettas and throwing pantyliners and bras onstage which soon became props... And the whole "lets pick this random person out of the audience to be our new drummer", was truly theatre and was quite entertaining.

Oh yeah. Completely drenched in sweat by the end of the show. Definately as it should be!!

The first time i saw them i was BLOWN away! My mom, friend and i got to meet Timmy. HE'S THE SWEETEST GUY ON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH!
:)

All of the shows are great and i can't forget any of them but I'm soooo glad to say that i was part of the front @ the Roxy in oct.03'. damn it was the best night of my life. my best friend got a kiss on the cheek from Bert while he was performing. He rubbed his hand all over my hair....very sexy and i admit i did a bit of grabbing :( . I'm in love with Bert it's quite ridiculous. I got the signatures from all the guys on my handbag, gave Joey a good bye hug. AND TO TOP THE WHOLE NIGHT OFF i got to kiss Bert....best kiss ever.....aaaaaah you can't even imagine how memorable that night was for me.

poobs - 2-11-2004 at 11:31 PM

I couldn't go to the Roxy show..I was stuck in Sacto thanks to those fucking fires!!! I still have my ticket..:( Oh well..I've had great experiences at all of the shows and especially at the Dynomite video shoot..That was rad..

TurtleEnterprises - 2-11-2004 at 11:35 PM

The show last tuesday was fabulous. hardly anyone was dancing so that made my friends and I stand out in the crowd. afterward when we were getting shirts, tim sang to us and justin complimented our outfits.

oh! and during The Sounds, Maja kept bringing attention to my friend because she had gone bowling with all of them. it's almost like no one else existed except her because maja kept coming over and giving her kisses on the cheek!

13ounces - 3-9-2004 at 08:04 PM

don't have a moment yet...but on the 23rd i'll get one...

Goulet - 3-9-2004 at 08:22 PM

Well, overall moment at a Bot show was seeing a friend I hadn't seen in a great many years, and finding out that he is a bot fan, too. That was a mind fuck. But related tot he band themselves, it was probably just seeing them for the first time, overall. By the end, everybody went insane and I ended up thrown on stage, and had to fight my way back. I also got a setlist, and got it signed afterwards.

Seb - 3-9-2004 at 10:53 PM

I have no IMA story because ive never seen them:(
They are coming to town this month but I'm not 19(only 6 more months:( )

MichelleRene - 3-10-2004 at 06:20 AM

Oh nooooooo Seb, you mean you can't go? That stinks! Is there any way you can sneak in or something?

I wish you luck.....I don't want to make you feel bad but you're missing out on a great show.

Try and sneak in.......

Seb - 3-10-2004 at 03:20 PM

Its hard to sneak in, you need two pieces of ID at the door and theres no other way of getting in. Im thinking of getting a fake id(which costs alot) or taking my dads old ID and re-laminating it(he looked identical to me when he was my age). Im missing Broken Social Scene, IMA, YYY and a couple other bands because im not 19. A friend of mine 19th Bday is a WEEK after all of these concerts so shes really pissed.

VastSpoils - 4-6-2004 at 09:24 PM

I wish I could say I have been to these shows to, But Im afraid i havent been to any. Only thing Ive got on you guys (and Girls) is Im Timmys Nephew. I hope to join you guys in seeing some shows soon.

poobs - 4-6-2004 at 10:03 PM

Dude..You gotta get your uncle to get you in to some shows! He's so amazing on stage and a really cool person..You're lucky to have him in the fam!! :duh:

avw86 - 4-7-2004 at 12:22 AM

Well, I've only been to two shows since a lot of the shows they've played here have been at 18+ venues, and I'm 17.

The first one was seeing them open for the White Stripes in Berkeley, Sept. '03. I had never heard of them before, and had no idea what to expect. They blew me away. The bassline for 'Dynomite' got me hooked, and "STD Dance" reeled me in ;). After the show, we just HAD to buy the album. Been listening to it nonstop ever since. :) Oh, and before the White Stripes came on, Timmy came walking down the aisle where I was, so I stopped him and asked him to sign my Kirkland Signature (Costco, baby!) water bottle!

But this past show at Slim's in San Francisco was fan-fucking-tastic! Meeting new people (like Poobs!);having them play an amazing set ; having Alex sing a part of "Dirty Life" right to me ;) ; giving Justin a thumbs-up sign and him taking a bow afterwards; getting the setlist, posters, pins; meeting them all (they were all extremely nice). Just everything turned out perfect. :D I need to see them live again soon...I'm feigning!

I love this band  :D

VastSpoils - 4-7-2004 at 03:36 PM

Yeah Id Like to get into some shows but Im afraid Im only 16 so I kinda have to have him come to me. =P Hopeing he will play in Tempe or Las Vegas in the Future.

Seb - 4-12-2004 at 04:14 PM

You are luucky your uncle is Timmy. If he were my uncle he would never get me out of his hair, I would always be hanging out with him, haha. It always seems like everyone else knows or is related to someone famous or something.

happysmilely - 4-12-2004 at 05:19 PM

well
I would say last show was very good!
San Diego, SOMA 3/14/2004

second in line behind poobs (who is very good company). good top spot, nice small personal stage.

got the set list, pick, pictures, autographs...

they played I'M YOUR BITCH! (good live song)

and while the band played I got me a kiss from Alex

I felt special when Justin said they remebered me from last time I meet them. And strange when Joey said "your more of a rock star then I am"..... (lots of fun stuff)

Yeah I'm 19, and they play a bunch of 21 and up shows. So it's hard for me to go see Ima Robot. But whenever I can, I GO. It was funny when Ima came to do an appearance at a local record store. As I was chatting with them I said I was mad because I never get to see them play live because they do mainly 21 and up shows. Alex then replied, "Will fix that" and the tour manager (nice guy) picks up his cell phone and calls up and makes an all ages date! (The one I posted above)

I just love how much the boys care for the fans!!!

Justin was saying how it's hard to book all ages shows because no venues want to make $ from selling drinks. So the all age’s clubs are going away. They all said they would play nothing but all ages if they could. So know they care and are trying their best to please you all, it's just hard for them.

In BC the legal age is 19(rest of Canada is 18) and most bands play 19+ venues, it sucks soooo much, only ~6 more months to go though.
