Slight Album Review From Savannahnow.com

I'm not sure what the site's all about, but I think it has a heavy teen focus.

From savannahnow.com:

IMA ROBOT FEATURES QUIRKY, '80s SOUND

Los Angeles quintet reminds reviewer of Devo, David Bowie and Beck.

Meet four up-and-coming artists whose music won’t be filed in the hard-core rock section of your local music store.

Instead, it’s a meeting of the sounds of Devo and David Bowie that has been created by Ima Robot.

With catchy lyrics, like those from “Dynomite” and bonus track “Black Jettas,” as well as the 80’s feel, you’re sure to be pleased.

The first song, and first-released single, “Dynomite,” tells you what it’s going to sound like. When it first starts, it catches the listener a couple of seconds into the song.

The nursery rhyme lyrics inject some humor.

All of the tracks are whimsical, but some of the tracks have some familiar sounds. “Song #!1” has Beck-like qualities, with likeable drumming and a catchy and funny chorus.

The song gets its Beck-ish sound honestly – bassist Justin Meldal-Johnsen and (now former) drummer Joey Waronker toured with Beck for years.

Lyrics, though, are sometimes a little hard to understand.
“A Is For Action” sounds like music for a rave. The drumming is good, and the song is short with fun lyrics to mirror the alphabet, such as “D is for disease/E is for empire.”
Ima Robot isn’t afraid to take on a '70s pimp feel, either, blending “Shaft” and 007, in “Dirty Life.”

A Rolling Stone reviewer in late January said the lead singer of the “extremely caffeinated quintet Ima Robot has perfected a jittery, shrill style of singing that you heard a lot in the early to mid-Eighties, from people such as Oingo Boingo’s Danny Elfman, Missing Persons’ Dale Bozzio and Sparks’ Russell Mael.”

Don’t let it turn you off – it’s worth the listen.

Duh. That's what I'm referring to. You DID know she was from Savannah! It was the first thing you read about her! If I was meeting someone and the first thing they said to me was that they liked apples. Then I replied to them by saying "I didn't know you liked apples!" that would be a fucking lie, because they just told me they did. You get? Oh, and I never said you were from Savannah. Maybe read my posts before you assume what they are about.

Evil - 7-11-2005 at 11:34 PM
