Could people please spare five minutes and help a PHD student do some research for his project.
A brief outline of what im trying to achieve. Im working towards a research project for a PHD in Advertising. The area of research i have chosen to
look at is 'how is digital distribution changing the way consumers get, use and feel about a product' To put that into english, i am
conducting research into how the internet is changing the way that we get our music, games, movies etc and what it does to our attitudes on the item.
For example, very few of us would go into a shop and steal a cd, yet most of us have stolen a song via napster type sites, why is this?
I have tried to keep it brief, for more information on the research it can be found here. I will publish updates and articles for users to read as
time goes along so you can see how you views are being used. if i can ask one big favour form people - can you spread the word on th eproject so we
can get as many opinion as possible.
to do the questionnaire and be of great help please go to www.theresearchstudent.netfirms.com (sorry about the sub domain name am poor and not a web designer)
Many thanks, please spread the link round to people you know, all the opinions will be of use in my studies

but is downloading a song really equatable to theft?
theft is defined as stealing a tangible item. what have tangible item have i taken when i download? and from whom have i taken it?
is mp3 downloads theft? or is it cheap advertising for bands?
(sorry i'm a nerdy IP lawyer)

I see it this way, if it's a band that is my all time favorite band I will spend money and go out a buy the album, even if I'm not happy
with the way it sounds. If it's a band who I never heard before or a band that I heard people talking about being a pretty good band, I would
download a couple of there songs to get a listen, or just download the songs that I like on the album. There is no point in wasting your money on
something you're not sure of.

talking about the problems of the music industry:
after downloading and black market thereīs another
enemy: CD-thieves. you know the problem of sending
out CDs, pre-copies to journalists. Because a grand lot of those package are either "getting lost" on their postal way and turn up in the
internet later on or the journalist takes them straight to a cd shop ...coz of
course everybody wants to listen to a cd asap...pre-realease? - the better. In order to prevent
this from happening they had the "cunning" idea to use pseudonyms instead of the real artistīs name. e.g. Eric Clapton goes "Eric
Cole", Depeche Mode are known as "Black Swarm" and Franz Ferdinand? "C Drive Backup". Rolling Stones - "The Little
Wonders".
who comes up with these names ? the interns? and iīm curious on what pseudonym Virgin will use for Ima Robot.....giggle.

Floor plans?
Noisemonster - 10-30-2005 at 04:09 AM
teeheehee.. cool.. i thought about it a lot because these journalists get so many cd's sometimes, and if they don't like them, its easy to
sell them early to get a lil' extra money.
minimandy14 - 10-30-2005 at 08:28 AM
Hmmmm, I plan to go to college for photo journalism, do you think I'll get cds sent to me early?
Noisemonster - 10-30-2005 at 06:12 PM
if you are a band photographer, and very lucky, then maybe. otherwise.. not.
minimandy14 - 10-30-2005 at 08:40 PM
Oh man, that would be so sweet if I was a band photographer!

well, if neccessary send them
(the label) a couple of fake CD
reviews.
itīs not too difficult to get promo
material for journalists even if they
arenīt writing for the big shit. just
make sure to regularly send in
copies of the mag with your review
in it and always get back to the label.
theyīll love you!
