Zep

Led Zeppelin released a live CD and a live DVD today... incredible stuff, I'm watching the DVD right now.

I used to be big classic rock dork, but actually when I got into Beck, that changed fast. :) Now the only classic rock I really can be bothered with is Zep, though honestly I don't think of them as classic rock. Or heavy metal. Those labels really hurt them, in my opinion. Especially live, when they were almost prog. They shouldn't be tossed in with the Van Halens and Bad Companys and Deep Purples, frankly.

Anyways, I think my Zep boots have all been made irrelevant by these releases. Lots of jaw-dropping moments, and the sound quality is really good, and I don't even have a good DVD stereo set-up.

You already have the DVD? I am going to get it and save it for July, when I'm done with summer session. I heard all about it, it sounds like it was actually a worthwhile project.

I've never been the biggest fan of bootleg videos, but this is something else. Even includes my all-time favorite Zep footage, the black-and-white half-hour they did on Danish TV in 1969! The crowd is a bunch of bored teens in ugly sweaters sitting on the floor at the band's feet, seemingly unimpressed.

You should get the DVD now though, it's on sale big-time almost everywhere.

One Zep mailing list I've been on for years even has been getting secret insider updates on the DVD production. Jimmy Page really went all out on it.

All right I'm breaking down and buying it now...

I have it now and am planning on watching it tonight. I read somewhere that they played so poorly at one of the concerts, Page had correct guitar chords dubbed over the wrong ones?

I'm not sure how much of the DVD has been touched up. I don't think a whole lot though, and if it was it was more likely due to recording problems, not performance problems. There might be some though, keep an eye on this site... I think he's planning to do the DVD breakdown.

Don't worry, it's just mucous!

Hey Drac, that Garden Tapes link has the breakdown for edits and stuff from the DVD. No, Jimmy didn't re-record anything. But he did splice in "patches" from other nights in the shows (and at one point, he doubled up a guitar run). That's how Song Remains the Same was done up anyways, so no big surprises here...

There's an awesome version of Moby Dick on DVD One from Royal Albert Hall. John Bonham is insane!

It's pretty cool how they have mixed in bootleg footage and official footage.

Good link, Cap. All those bootlegging stories makes me wonder if the whole idea of taping shows might be a good concept for a book. Like get all kinds of stories from people who went to great lengths to get recordings of some of these Zep (and other) shows, on all kinds of weird formats...I'm sure they have a lot of anecdotes about what they went through security-wise, and what happened to some of the recordings.

Maybe you could write it in the free time you have leading up to law school this fall.:D I smell $4 mill advance from Harcourt.
