Friggin Janglin hell!

JPG - 5-19-2010 at 08:40 PM

its good... the music was...

Phobiac - 5-19-2010 at 09:30 PM

That's too funny. I remember that with Ima Robot the sole purpose of writing Black Jettas was to get VW to use it in a commercial, but that never materialized.

When ES&TMZ wrote Jangl'in Soul...were they shooting for a Ford Fiesta commercial? :)

The things you want can come when you least expect them.

There's another commercial that I will have to post here as it reminds of a strange Home mix or something.

Phobs

Sarbear - 5-20-2010 at 07:42 AM

Justy and I last night were at a friends house and a commercial for HBO shows (a montage) came on and it was to Home. It was weird.

neckbeard - 5-21-2010 at 10:52 PM

home was in a verizon comercial just now

Sarbear - 5-25-2010 at 07:07 PM

LEFT AND RIGHT these songs are flying everywhere.

acalliopemusical - 5-25-2010 at 08:29 PM

i mean, as much as we want to keep these gems to ourselves, i'm just happy that good music is making it public and that the zeros are getting some dollars in their wallets. if ford wanted to use my song, i would put a bow on it and hand it over and then dance around to the sound of my jingly pockets:)

JPG - 5-26-2010 at 05:15 AM

Microsoft Kin ad that was pulled. Try to guess why.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfpAkNyHAtQ
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/rfpAkNyHAtQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/rfpAkNyHAtQ&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

and then if you go to kin.com you will see the edited ad.

"...This week I had an experience that threw the whole debate into sharp relief. A few weeks ago, a friend sent me a link to the music video for a song called "Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes. It's incredibly catchy. It reminded me of a spaghetti-western version of Midnight Oil. (That's good in my book.) For once, I felt like I had a little bit of an inside scoop on something exciting. I was looking forward to catching them at Coachella this weekend.
Then, on Monday morning, I was waiting in a conference room for Microsoft to announce its forthcoming Kin phones when the song began playing softly through the speakers. I mentioned the band to the presenter, and he was surprised I knew who they were. I thought we were sharing a moment of musical synchronicity--until he mentioned that Microsoft had licensed the song for the launch. Now, "Home" is featured prominently on the Kin home page--it starts playing when you view the video for the Kin social-networking feature known as The Spot. While writing about Kin this week, I've heard the first few seconds of the song dozens of times. Oh, and apparently there will be a Kin tent at Coachella.
My interest in the song and the band has suddenly diminished. I know it's not rational. I have nothing against Microsoft or the Kin team, and I can't blame their marketers for having good taste. I can't blame the band--it's almost impossible to make a living in rock 'n' roll, and for all I know the members of the band had nothing to do with this placement. But fair or not, my opinion of the song and the artist have been irrevocably altered. And I would have felt the same if this song had been used in a commercial for Apple or Volkswagen or any other company.
Does this make me a dinosaur? Do you respect artists who license their music for commercial purposes? Does it make a difference what product the song is advertising? Is "selling out" an antique notion? Let me know in comments."

Outatime - 5-26-2010 at 05:53 AM

There has been a handfull of ads and commercials running around with your music in it (Ford Fiesta, Microsoft Kin, HBO montage-y thing I randomly saw, and some TV show appearances, American Idol, Community, Chuck).

Lots of people today call this selling-out. (I think selling out is more changing what you stand for for the money or fans, not commercials), what are your thoughts? And do you even have much of a say in these situations? I know I would want some extra cash for the band on the road, but fans dont care about things like that. They here you once on the radio or once on a microsoft ad and think, aw man, there not my little secret anymore, and claim to not like the band anymore. In some ways I understand this, but personally, I dont care, and will love you no matter what yo do.

Right well, pretty simply put- 2 reasons-1 - we want to spread the love and trust that it will not only survive a commercial but retain it's communication and purity when it reaches and turns on people who otherwise have not heard us. 2. There are 10 people in the band. I this day and age, money is the commodity that ensures survival in cities. The band for the most part lives in Los angeles and needs money to exist there comfortably. While we are a young band, these forms of income are almost necessary for a band of our size to stay healthy and comfortable. Soon we will be earning enough in other areas to not feel the need to consider such things in the same way and with the same pressures. For instance we got offered an AT&T commercial this week for quite a but of money and are turning it down.
See ya soon Justy

Delta - 5-30-2010 at 06:14 AM

the same thing is happening w. bek, he wrote two new songs for the true blood soundtrack and the twilight soundtrack. Alot of people over at stewoo are really pissed about it, but come on, A, we have new songs, B new income may mean an easier chance of us getting more songs. Its not selling out, its making a living.

Sarbear - 5-30-2010 at 09:31 AM

Well said Delta.

elblueblazer - 5-30-2010 at 10:08 AM

IT IS SELLING OUT!!!! but that shit doesnt matter these days. integrity doesn't mean anything when your hungry.... or in they're case, in need of a new shinny bus.

its goes against the punk rock values i grew up with. but then, even IGGY sold out. i have no hope. Sell Away

I Killed Laura Palmer - 6-2-2010 at 03:42 PM

Alex was making sell-out jokes at the Big Sur show.
