"Ima Robot
If one believes the ink already spilled on Ima Robot, the just-emerging L.A. quintet represents the leading edge of an incipient new wave revival, an
arty powerhouse determined to take mid-'70s Bowie and early-'80s Missing Persons down crazy, unexplored alleyways. That's only part of
the story: The bass-drums tandem of Justin Meldal-Johnson and Joey Waronker backed Beck for much of the last eight years, and so even when glam-minded
lead singer Alex Ebert lets loose a skyscraping wail, they counter with a firmly planted groove that's likely to reference surf music or haywire
funk or choppy electro. It helps that Ima Robot, appearing at the TLA, writes serious songs: The eponymous debut, out now on Virgin, contains several
relentless, infectious gems, among them "Dirty Life," "Here Come the Bombs," and the pulse-quickening "bonus" track,
"Black Jettas."
