Some Early Evening Heat
Hot Hot Heat - Minneapolis, MN - 10.2003

"Ever feel like you're four seconds from a long, sad life in the geriatric ward? I do sometimes. And I recently felt it in the most
unsuspected place-a Hot Hot Heat show. There were really two things that got me feeling this way. First of all, the door was at 5:00. Seriously. If
rock has a "time" (like beer), it is most certainly not 5:00. The senior citizens aren't even early birding by then. Secondly, at just
a few days short of my 23rd birthday, I think I was likely one of the oldest people in attendance. Not so much a good feeling. I knew it was going to
be like this, though…and had it been anyone other than Hot Hot Heat, you couldn't have paid me to go. But the Heat just proved too tempting.
L.A.'s Ima Robot was first on the bill. As soon as these guys took the stage (well over a half an hour late, by the way…but who can blame them?),
I completely forgot about what time it was and had a moment to revel in my seniority. Vocalist Alex Ebert writes lyrics that the average
fourteen-year-old fan just isn't going to fully understand. (I'm comin' for you/I wanna shoot you up/I wanna do you/I wanna screw you
up/I wanna fuck fuck fuck/On this hot night…) Ima Robot is all the best parts of the 80s that we still love-like Roxy Music smooth synth, Devo piping
vocals, and that indescribable something from early Jane's Addiction-set spinning by the members' hip-hop background and a fantastically
tweaked out modernity that just makes them unbearably cool. Their 80s revival is so convincing and infectious they almost had me running out to get a
style mullet to match vocalist Ebert's. Almost."

get a mullet. haha. yeah, that was an insanely early show. i have never heard of that. but it was also thursday. maybe they were pandering to a
younger audience. but a lot of people at the chicago show looked so young too. it shocked me. it made me feel old.
