This is pretty big - Ima Robot (remember, no album out and only a handful of shows in the past year) got one of the coveted previews in this week's
"Scoring The Clubs" section of the L.A. Weekly. Thanks to everyone who contacted them with tipoffs about the Troubador show!
Weekly Preview
Ima Robot, Jet, The Sons at the Troubadour.
When the “rock is back” fervor fades, more artful projects like Ima Robot will continue to gleam and grow long-term. The recent Virgin signees (who’ll
release the EP Public Access this summer) are powered by glam, electro and post-punk — think David Bowie meets Devo meets Television — and boast some
major musicianly circuitry, including bassist Justin Meldal-Johnson and drummer Joey Waronker, two Beck bandmates who’ve also played on recordings by
the likes of Macy Gray, Pete Yorn and too many more to list. Though they were given a tough slot at Coachella (they went on early the second day),
androgynous lead singer Alex Ebert and the Robot’s razor-sharp yet hammer-heavy rhythm section blasted spacy, high-energy rockets that held their own
against the fest’s buzz-band procession. Two acts you just might see staking a claim at next year’s desert rockathon, Jet and the Sons, offer more
straight-ahead riff action, both steeped in an alluring ‘70s haze that brings to mind obligatory era icons the Stooges and the Stones. (Lina Lecaro)
