FROM out of the ether - and with little of the usual inky music press fanfare - sneaks one of this year’s finest alternative rock singles.

A bunch of REM and Beck session musicians cherry pick from the coolest sources – lead track 12=3 (Here Comes The Doctors) trawls through New York's new wave and features pretentiously histrionic vocals befitting the title.

Black Jettas snuggles up to Radio 4’s punk funk style but inflects it with an Eighties pop streak, while Sex Symbols on Parade is brasher with echoes of Sid Vicious.

But the best is saved for last - The Beat Goes On’s primitive Joy Division/OMD synths encasing a devilishly simple pop core.
