it was just them performing, its funny, the only thing letterman said on camera to them was at josh, he said, "nice drums".

I went back to watch this again and noticed that Nico has something written on his shirt in blue paint tape....

I cant figure out what it says, but I did notice that when Letterman was walking through the band after they were playing he was keeping his back away to him...
