Ima Robot opende zaterdagnamiddag de festiviteiten in de château-tent. De nog onbekende groep bleek een van de meest illustere ritmesecties van het festival te hebben. Bassist Justin Meldal-Johnson en drummer Joey Waronker speelden namelijk met zowat elke bekende artiest uit de jaren negentig, laat dat nu REM, Tori Amos, Beck of Macy Gray zijn. Het wat neofuturistisch klinkende gezelschap gijzelde al de gelukkigen die waren komen kijken, want Ima Robot is stukken beter dan het vergelijkbare Hot Hot Heat. De groep uit LA roept door haar superieur muziekmanschap herinneringen op aan Elvis Costello's Attractions en de vroege Public Image Ltd. Van de songs onthouden we vooral 'Dirty Mind' (niet de Prince-song) en de hitsige single 'Dynomite'. Verder was er het weinig aan de verbeelding overlatende 'Blackjettas', een liedje over ex-vriendinnen en zwarte Volkswagen Jetta's... Die song was zelfs pure avant disco en werkte excellent, net als de rest van deze krachtige set. Hun titelloze debuutplaat verschijnt op 15 september en lijkt ons de moeite waard om te checken. They should record a German or Dutch version of Black Jettas, in the manner of Burro for Beck or 99 Luftballoons for Nina.

Nice to hear they were "stukkan beter dan" Hot Hot Heat, I think that's good?

indeed, they were superb.
I never heard of hem before, but I stumbled in the tent with some friends (waiting for the sauna to open) and we danced from the beginning 'till the and we were all amazed.
Good sound , good music , good gig
(The best at Pukkelpop for me)

nice to hear a new band.
Although I thought at that moment that they were some forgotten eighties band :D
But now I know more, and I'll certainly buy their album
