New Songs
I chose the Linda Blair icon for this one because my head is still spinning after last night's performance!
I guess I'll start with the new music - by far, the most impressive of the lot was "Ages of Ruin," a Tommy-style epic replete with power guitar coda
and frenzied percussion. This song best exemplified how important it was to get Joey Waronker on drums...his skills are pretty much without peer in
rock and this type of composition lets him put them to use. The organization of this song was reminiscent of Bullets and Bread in that it built up
from a delicate melody into the classic Baroque drama that is this band. Sweeping themes, tempo changes, extreme catharsis, this song had it all.
"Sex Symbols on Parade" - Androgeny for you and me. Surf rock background mixed with punk underlying Alex in a Bowie extravagance. Short and sweet at
1:55. "Girls Love Me" mutates into "Boys Love me" and, finally, just "Love Me."
"Here Comes The Bomb" - This is the song a band writes after they've put out 6 albums and won 3 Kids' Choice Awards. Some of the lyrics: "We're award
winning, get this one time offer, buy our album please, we got 5 stars, it'll change your life, it'll make traffic bearable, only 15.99..." A
prediction of things to come? Probably. It's as if they're addressing these issues before the bomb hits in all its grim inevitability--experiencing
the sell-out now so it doesn't have to happen in real life? I dunno. Musically, this one rocks it hard, and the band almost dares the music industry
to eat them alive. Though the idea of an IMA Robot lunchbox is kinda tempting...
"New Negatives" - This song seemed the most meticulously composed of the most recent bunch. Fast and furious bass from JMJ, some latin (?) flava in
the softer middle section? Punky but smooth.
Still going through the other songs, more later!
edit: "Here Comes The Bomb" - I should mention that, musically, you'll love this one if you have any fondness in your heart for Devo. How cool that
we are finally in the era where we can hear bands who were influenced by "Are We Not Men? We Are Devo!" and pay homage in their own music.
