what other bands do you like?

hello fellow members...im just crossing over here from the-vines.net and checking out this forum- very cool. :D

anyways- i was just wondering...what other kinds of bands do you all like on here? the only ones that ive seen mentioned in this other music forum are the vines, beck, and flaming lips- surely you all have to like more than just them?

my list highlights

Yeah, there's too many for me to list - it changes everyday, but Phobes list is quite close. Ive got a couple of bands that you should check out (links for most):

The Bishops - you can d/l a few tracks from their site - quality stuff

Mr Scruff - Mancunian dj Andy something a.k.a. Mr Scruff - unusual, dancy & fun, but not to everyones taste

The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - i dont like the new stuff as much, id suggest you bought Acme coz its more 'raw'.

The Super Furry Animals - They're Welsh, v. good and.... i dont know - buy an album or something

Soulwax - Belgian rock - they currently have a remix album out, titled '2ManyDJ's' and its got remixes like Strokes vs Christina! (weird!) + loads of others. Check out their site for some other remixes to d/l as well

The Meters - now, im partial to a wee bit of funk (aren't we all!?) and these guys are/were really good - do a search for them on the net

BUT, i would mostly suggest.... Beck! - he's the man - he's so unique and im sure there's a part of his music that will appeal to everyone (he's done hip-hop, folk, funk, rock and much more - i think somebody summed him up when they said he's a 'musical cameleon'

I have to admit, as much as I love and appreciate Sea Change, I am a sucker for pure energy and originality--which is why I loved Beck's Midnite Vultures and why IMA Robot is without peer my favorite new band.

Other music I've been listening to a lot lately:
The Hives
The Kinks (really listening to them for the first time, my parents were more Beatles than Kinks)
Cap'n Beefheart's Spotlight Kid, great album on so many levels
Chet Baker - Cool jazz is where it's at
Hot Hot Heat - reminiscent of The Cure
The Talking Heads - another one that hit me relatively late in life, I kick myself for not getting into them sooner

Bonus info: Ditto on Phobiac's iPod list, except I would delete and crush under my feet the Dave Matthews, Puddle of poop, most of the Jack Johnson, and the Unwritten Law. The Blink 182 is also not really my thing.

As I wake up right now the only band on my mind is Supergrass since they were on MadTV last night and kicked ass answering the question on why the line I witnessed last Saturday at Spaceland for them was so damn long.

Right now in my CD player is:

1.The Flaming Lips
2. A mixed CD I burned containing
Kings of Convenience(for those mellow times)
Sunny Day Real Estate
Stereolab
Radiohead
Foofighters(funny shit last night when Jim Carrey hopped on SNL stage)
The Shins
The Payolas
The Meat Puppets
Peter Murphy
Doves
The Plimsouls
etc.
3. Imperial Teen
4. A Classic burned Mix CD with
America
Gerry Rafferty
Roberta Flack
Stevie Wonder
Chicago
etc.
5. Another mix CD I burned containing:
MC Paul Barman
Foreign Legion
Shalamar(I hate not using all the space on a CD:D)
6. The Cult (a mix of the greatest from "Love" & "Electric")

so many more to discuss...

Well, my hardcore faves are Beck, Bob Dylan, and Radiohead.

Outside of them, I absolutely LOVE Roxy Music & Bryan Ferry, Mazzy Star, Sonic Youth. And a lot of Krautrock-- Neu, Can, Kraftwerk, etc.

Lately, I've been digging Cat Power's new record. And the Flaming Lips.

Other stuff I feel like mentioning -- Pearl Jam, Echo & the Bunnymen, REM, Leonard Cohen, Low, White Stripes, Roy Harper, A Tribe Called Quest, John Cale, Bill Withers, Stereolab. Smokey & Miho.

I hope to go get the recent Johnny Cash and Nick Cave albums.

I've been making a lot of mix cds for people... they're getting famous among my friends! :)

(That's enough for now. ;))

Neuwave, I have Stevie Wonder on the brain lately, too. Not the ballads, the truly funked-up stuff. Also Cody Chestnutt and all contemporary soul in general.

The Reindeer Section album is pretty surprising, I didn't know what to expect when I first heard it and was rattled by how good it was!

Other than that, I really enjoy the U of MN's college radio am station, you can get it online at http://radiok.cce.umn.edu/radiok/

On the Stevie, you must be talkin bout "Songs In The Key of LIfe". The reason I've went back was because I finally saw "High Fidelity". I did see Cody on Conan a few weeks ago, and my neighbor can't stop talking about him. I thought he was cool with The Roots backin' him.

Vin:
My favorite by Echo is "The Promise".

Pretty much all Echo = top-notch. I'm a sucker for "Lips Like Sugar" though. Also "The Cutter" and pretty much all of their Crocodiles album.

Also I really cannot stop listening to the new Cat Power disc.

FYI re: Cat Power. She's going to be on KCRW this Thursday during Morning Becomes Eclectic. Nic Harcourt said today that he's already taped the interview/performance, and it will air this Thursday. Also of note, it is reported on a certain bbs that Beck was seen at the recent Cat Power show at the Knitting Factory.

Did you get a chance to go to that one, Jo? I remember them mentioning it in the newsletter--there was no presale for it but I assumed with the good buzz her album's been getting it would have been a hot ticket.

Neuwave, I am hooked on "Innervisions." Did you know that, on "Songs In The Key Of Life," Snuffy Walden played lead guitar? I think he was the guy who did the background music for a bunch of shows, like that one with Claire Danes and Jared Leto that I can't remember the name of right now!

I am green with envy over your Stevie Wonder record collection. I wish we had the proper smilie for that emotion.

My favorite episode of My So Called Life was when Jordan needed English tutoring and Brian offered to do it, but Jordan mistakenly kept calling him "Brain."

Anyone here like Les Nubians? I have free tickets to see Ladytron and Simian, which I am stoked about, for this Saturday--but I also have free tix to Les Nubians that same night. Ladytron will likely go on around 7 or 8 at one venue and Les Nubians will go on less than a quarter mile away at about 10. I may try to make both, unless anyone has a rave review about either. Bueller?

Lifted without permission from JMJ's website:

Quote:
Otherwise, please do check out a new album recently released that I played on: "Light & Magic" by Ladytron from the U.K. This is a wonderful, mostly electronic pop record produced by Mickey Petralia and put out by Emperor Norton records. I think it is a wonderful album.

Aw darn, I just typed out a longish review of Ladytron and it disappeared into some gaping internet void. Oh well. Let me just say that the East German discoteque groove that they play is extremely cool and that I am once again happy to see another band influenced by Devo, Kraftwerk, and New Order. Putting them on the high priority list for Coachella, if only to have the chance to bear witness to their terrific hair again:

Rains it pours, indeed!

Now it's looking like

April 10 - Cat Power
April 16 - Yo La Tengo
April 20 - White Stripes
April 23 - Flaming Lips

:cool2:

Though I'll probably not go to the Stripes, I'm going to try to hit the other 3 for sure.
