So now the two major Canadian Unis have weighed in with album reviews. This one from Mcgill's
McGill Daily Online.
Proceed with caution, the reviewer thinks Alex's voice is--gasp--untrained. Yes, this band would be so much better with Josh Groban fronting
it...
"With their weird haircuts, questionable sexual ethics and thrift store jackets, Ima Robot is a five-piece LA band that could conceivably be “the
next big thing.” Forcefully political, and cockily humorous at the same time (“G is for greed, O is for order, V is for villains in three piece suits
defending the border...”) their major-label debut is a whole lot of retro glam rock, enhanced significantly by lots of cool robot sounds and
androgynous yelping.
Notable tracks include the hilarious “Black Jettas,” an ode to ex-girlfriends and trendy cars, and “Dirty Life,” which will probably open half a dozen
disturbing indie films in the next year.
The booklet is art in itself, and the lyrics are more stylish and quirky than most currently popular “new rock” bands of the moment. You’ll dance to
this in alt-rock clubs, and have it stuck in your head for days. You may even scribble some of the lyrics on the wall of a bathroom somewhere –
they’re that fresh.
It’s not, however, any great step in music history. Alex Ebert’s voice, though interesting, is untrained and tends to come off as amateur.
Occasionally sounding like (sigh) both The Cure and The Clash, extremely Bowie-esque on some tracks (“What Are We Made From” is startling in its
stylistic similarity), the album is nothing terribly original, but damn it’s a lot of fun."
