Papermag: "Your New Cat's Meow"

Ima Robot's converted Papermag.com:

IMA ROBOT
Ima Robot (Virgin)
"Hipsters, here's the good news: Your new intergalactic music superheroes have arrived in the form of Ima Robot. After hearing their debut album, you'll want to emulate everything they do. Here's the bad news: Emulating everything they do includes lead singer Alex Ebert's bowl-cut-mullet hybrid. Fashion faux pas aside, this LA quintet does little wrong when showcasing their wonderfully flashy new-wave-goes-punk-rock sound, leaving no doubt as to why Virgin's A&R men snatched them up earlier this year. Vocally, Ebert is electrifying, channeling the glam spirit of Marc Bolan, while seasoned musicians like bassist Justin Meldal-Johnson and drummer Joey Waronker (both longtime Beck band members) provide a herky-jerky rhythmic backbone that thrills and kills. Tracks like "Dirty Life," a catchy, bass-driven homage to sleazy sex, slide up against poppy Bowie-esque love ballads ("Let's Talk Turkey";) with such a natural flow that this album sounds as if it's the greatest mix tape of unheard songs from the Œ70s and Œ80s ever. Bonus gem is "Black Jettas"‹a pee-your-pants funny paranoia track about ex-girlfriends driving around California in the popular Volkswagen models. Don't let the fact that it sounds like a mash of the Bloodhound Gang's "Bad Touch" and Blur's "Stereotypes" prevent you from blasting this pretty ditty from a boom box at your next loft party. If you think cheesy throwbacks tunes can sound fresh and fly, then you're right, and Ima Robot is your new cat's meow."
