IMA Robot
Virgin Records
"Let's get the only thing bad about this band out of the way first. They don't seem to really like robots, nor do they dress or sing
about robots. However, there are robots and links to robot sites on their Web page.
Other than that, IMA Robot kick a whole lot of ass. They sound like the bastard sons of The Locust, David Bowie and The Talking Heads. Yes, that does
make for some random segues on the record, but jumping from a punk rock tune to a new wave song is hardly a negative.
Vocalist Alex Ebert shouts like a young John Lydon on the records balls-out opening tracks Dynomite and Song #1, before making way for a collection of
synth-wave tunes that highlight the record's midriff. The heavier songs rely on noise overdubs that fill out the outer-limits of IMA Robot's
sound.
The band hits the harder beats towards the end of the record before a stepping back into the age of Flock of Seagulls with the guitar-less synth rap
Black Jettas. However, I think the song is actually about ex-girlfriends with black VW Jettas. But I'll ignore that for now."
