Weeklydig.com: "Virgin Knows What Time It Is"

Boston's Weeklydig.com reviews the album--warm feelings abound, with strange animosity towards Black Jettas... (?)

IMA ROBOT
by Scott Sand

"Virgin knows what time it is. The studio fat cats are probably sitting around, patting each other's pinstriped backs, lighting cigars with hundred dollar bills. This band has buzz. Vocalist Alex Ebert sounds like a cross between Suede's Brett Anderson and Steve Bays of Hot Hot Heat. The five-piece, cobbled together from session musicians who worked with Beck and REM, among others, blends elements of electroclash, glam and straight out rock. You've got plenty of synth and some interesting programming, gritty throbbing guitar and thudding toms; it's fun music, kids. The formula works best on the glammy tracks, swaggering around on "Dream" and "Dirty Life." The worst songs, "Here Come the Bombs" and "Black Jettas," flounder under hipster pretenses, electro-gimmickry and simple juvenilia. Ima Robot is like a more mainstream (read: "better";) ARE Weapons, crafting catchy party music. The band members could just as easily nail down their own musical niche as they could trend themselves into obsoleteness."
