Ima Robot: Public Access
Review by: Angelo DeFranzo
"Do you feel like getting musically adventurous while only spending a nominal fee to do so? A good place to start would be the new four-song EP
from L.A.'s Ima Robot. Clocking in at approximately 12 minutes, PUBLIC ACCESS mixes the neo-electronic, dance floor-ready styles of today with a
generous portion of old-school (primarily 1980s-infused) indie rock. The strongest of the tracks presented on this U.K. import is the eclectic
"12=3 (Here Come The Doctors)", which delves into the Batcave-era gothic rock, new romantic, and indie pop genres, while maintaining all of
the airiness of The Cure on one of its more melancholy days . From the get-go, the blistering snarl of vocalist Alex Ebert screams Public Image
Limited-era Johnny "Rotten" Lydon, which works surprisingly well within the context of the music. The next tracks "Black Jettas"
(a lyrically clever, but pretty standard electro-clash number) and the short & sweet "Sex Symbols On Parade" only prime the listener for
the new wave-like closing anthem "The Beat Goes On". Ultimately, this effort left me salivating for the band's latest self-titled
full-length. Ima Robot are definitely a breath of fresh air within the realm of bands that are reviving the new wave sound of the Eighties."
